Shank Trunk Nails: Also known as cut nails or clinch nails.
We sell five sizes of brass-plated steel trunk nails and four sizes of
plain steel cut nails,
all made one at a time on
an old-fashioned cut nail press. The heads on all of these are just
a hair larger than 1/4 of an inch (9/32").
These are easy to work with
as the steel is soft enough to bend easily when using your nailing heel.
Priced according to the
descriptions below, all prices include shipping for destinations in the
USA.

Zinc or Copper Square Shank Nails, 1" Long

On some trunks, copper or zinc square-shank nails were used, and these may be just the thing you need to complete your accurate restoration or reproduction project.
These nails are one inch long and have a head diameter of 9/32" (just over a quarter of an inch). Top of the nail head is flat.
Made from solid copper or zinc, soft metals, so these don't drive well through hardwoods. Clinch over easily inside your trunk.
Choose Zinc or Copper 1" nails, sold in packs of 20, $3.00/pack, USA shipping included. We also sell these by the pound (about 450 nails) - see the drop-down menu, please.
Please don't forget that we have a $5 order minimum!

These are very small nails that come in handy when you want to hold something down,
like fabric coverings, leather, wood veneers, or laminates. All are made of soft steel
(the brass ones are brass-plated steel) and can be clinched to give them more holding power
(read about this in the 'How To' section). Priced at $8 per 1 ounce (a few hundred).

One-Inch Long SMALL HEAD Clinch Nails

These nickel-plated steel clinch nails are one inch in length and have a small, flat head that's about 1/8" across.
Square shank helps them clinch over easily.
These are true old fashioned clinch nails that a blacksmith or shoe cobbler (or trunk guy) would use.
These have a very small head - about 1/8" across at most. Not great for attaching parts to your trunk, but useful when nailing on slats.

Brettuns Village Screws
Because Sometimes Nails Just Won't Hold Part A to Part B

Not a bad idea to keep a few of these around the shop, just keep them hidden so nobody knows you use the little stinkers.
Screws 1 and 2 are brass-plated steel screws.
Screw 1 is 9/16" long, slot drive (regular screwdriver)
Screw 2 is 3/8" in length, a #4 screw, and has a Phillips head.
Screw 3 is plain steel. 1/2" in length, slotted head.
All of our screws are sold in packs of 100: $8, USA shipping included
Silver or Black or Brass Aluminum Binder Posts (Chicago Screws)
1/2" or 1" length

Aluminum binder posts or Chicago Screws, as they're sometimes known, are handy substitutes for rivets. We sell them in two sizes: 1/2 inch and 1 inch.
Both sizes have a head diameter of 7/16", and that's at both ends (the head and the screw-in piece).
Use the 1" size if the part you're attaching, plus the thickness of the wood it's going through, is somewhere
between 1" and 1-1/4", and there'a a diameter of 3/16" available. The 1/2" Binder Posts have a reach of 1/2" to 3/4". Just push the fat part
of one of these into a drilled hole, put the screw in from the other side, and screw them together. You're done. They draw down tight and hold well, and if you
want to be sure they don't loosen over time just put a drop of superglue in the threads just before you screw it together.
The post end is rounded/domed and smooth - it looks like a rivet head and nobody will know except you and us and we're not talking.
We use these as center pins through some of the heavier duty trunk handle brackets, and also to attach thick handles to heavy wood trunks.

Brass Buttons For Jenny Linds or Other pre-1900 Trunks

It's tough to find replacement brass tacks for your old Jenny Lind, Saratoga, or Civil War-era trunk.
These are pretty good reproductions, although they're brass-plated steel, not solid brass like the originals.
The head is 13/16" in diameter, and the nail is about an inch long. The head sticks up about 1/8".
Nail them right through the lid, then bend them over from the inside or curl the end back into the wood.
IMPORTANT: These tacks have darker stains here and there, some mottling, and some spotting on them -
the company who made them was trying to age them - they look mottled and that's just the way it is!
Prices include USA postage.
